Blue Penny
Take a step back in time at the Blue Penny Museum. A gem of world philately can be found in this small art and history museum facing the Port Louis harbour: one of the four copies of the two-pence indigo blue “Post Office” stamp in mint condition, issued on the island in 1847. The century-old basalt stone building (1913) once served as the head office of the New Mauritius Docks Company.
A piece of history in its own right, the Blue Penny Museum invites you to retrace the footsteps of explorers who left their mark on Mauritius. It provides an interactive look at 16th to 19th century maps and navigation instruments, archives from the colonial era and even works of art inspired by Paul and Virginie, the legendary couple from Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre’s novel of the same name.
